about

For the past three years a friendship has flowered and a bond has been made. Patrick and Anwar has come from different backgrounds in music but have found common ground in Indian Classical Music. This album is a checkpoint in their exploration with the music of India and with each other.

'Mere Bhai' consists of two Ragas, Vachaspati and Jait.

Raga Vachaspati, originally a South-Indian ragas which recently has been adopted into the North-Indian tradition of music, has an uplifting and serene mood. In this rendition of this raga Patrick plays his own composition in Rupak Taal (7 beats) made in the scale of Vachaspati where Re and Dha is omitted in the aroha (ascending scale). This version is inspired by Ustad Amir Khan interpretation of Vachaspati. It is said that the closest thaat to host Vachaspati, is Kalyan Thaat.

Raga Jait is an evening raga in the Marwa Thaat. Bygiving the all popular raga Bhoopali komal Re instead o shudh, we get the scale of Jait. In this rendition of Jait, Patrick plays a Gat (instrumental composition) by Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia. This recording was the first time Patrick has ever played this Gat, so we get a rare treat of a Gat being played for the first time by the artist.
